What makes Gladiator an action hero?

    o   He wears amour.
    o   Fighting swords.
    o   Strong

Statements about the hero in action adventure.
    Spiderman
The hero needs to be physically strong and to be able to fight and travel long distances across difficult terrain.

Spiderman needs to be strong because he is a superhero and saves people.
He wears a costume to hide his identity.
He was power: his spider web.
    ·      Spider senses.
    ·      Spider webs.

    Who is your favourite hero?

My favourite hero is Spiderman because you wouldn’t think of him as hero because he is a geek.  You wouldn’t think that a nerd would be a hero.

Iconography – the set of symbols or images used in cinema.

How does the iconography help us with the genre?

    The sword fighting.

    Goonies
This movie looks like they are on a adventure searching for something because they are holding a map. The miser en scene in a cave so they are searching for something maybe treasure. The facial expressions on the kids are confused and puzzled like they don’t know how to read the map.

§  Women – romance, James Bond, womanizer
§  Teens - stunts, action explosions, action cars
    §  Adults – fighting violence
§  British viewers – British accent British classics.
    §  American viewers- cars

List as many elements that appeal to the following groups.

§  Do you think the makers of the film and trailer intentionally tried to involve the two top groups you identified and alienate the bottom two groups? Why or why not?
Yes because men like to watch films with explosions, fighting and guns. They like to watch action adventure films. Most teens like to watch violence and action.

§  The movie made a quite a lot of money in the UK, because it was an action adventure movie and their audience was mainly men and teens.

    §  The Fugitive
§  The man running away from something. Fugitive means on the run.
§  The text at the bottom.
§  The way the background is blurry

    §  Gladiator.
    Sword.
    He’s wearing gladiator armour.
    He’s in a arena.
    Fighting.
    Something dark.

The movie that fits mostly in the genre is Pirate of the Caribbean, because the it looks most obvious because in the poster there is sword fighting. You can tell that there is going to be action by the name.

The movie that is mo hard to define is Avatar because in the poster it looks more peaceful and you wouldn’t think that there is any action in it.

    Dark Knight.

    Characters  -
    §  Hero - Batman.
    §  Villain. – The joker.

Why are action adventure films so popular with audiences?
    §  Action
    §  Fighting
    §  Cars
    §  Sometimes romance.
    §  Explosions
    §  Weapons
    §  Villains and Heroes.
§  Good guy saves the day.
    §  Suspense.

Action movies are usually “ high concept “ films where the whole movie can be easily summarized.

Why do some people criticise action adventure films?
    §  Simple theme
    §  Cheesy storyline.
    §  Low quality scripts.

     15.
